Kata songket berasal dari istilah sungkit dalam
bahasa Melayu dan bahasa Indonesia, yang
berarti "mengait" atau "mencungkil". Hal ini
berkaitan dengan metode pembuatannya;
mengaitkan dan mengambil sejumput kain tenun,
dan kemudian menyelipkan benang emas.
Selain itu, menurut sementara orang, kata
songket juga mungkin berasal dari kata songka,
songkok khasPalembang yang dipercaya
pertama kalinya kebiasaan menenun dengan
benang emas dimulai. Istilah menyongket
berarti ‘menenun dengan benang emas dan
perak’. Songket adalah kain tenun mewah yang
biasanya dikenakan saat kenduri, perayaan atau
pesta. Songket dapat dikenakan melilit tubuh
seperti sarung, disampirkan di bahu, atau sebagai
destar atau tanjak, hiasan ikat kepala. Tanjak
adalah semacam topi hiasan kepala yang terbuat
dari kain songket yang lazim dipakai oleh sultan
dan pangeran serta bangsawanKesultanan
Melayu. Menurut tradisi, kain songket hanya
boleh ditenun oleh anak dara atau gadis remaja;
akan tetapi kini kaum lelaki pun turut menenun
songket. Beberapa kain songket tradisional
Sumatra memiliki pola yang mengandung makna
tertentu.
Songket harus melalui delapan peringkat sebelum
menjadi sepotong kain dan masih ditenun secara
tradisional. Karena penenun biasanya dari desa,
tidak mengherankan bahwa motif-motifnya pun
dipolakan dengan hewan dan tumbuhan
setempat. Motif ini seringkali juga dinamai dengan
nama kue khas Melayu seperti serikaya, wajik,
dan tepung talam, yang diduga merupakan
penganan kegemaran raja.
